Early on Tuesday morning, a group of excited Year 12 students arrived at the Snapchat Headquarters in Farringdon, London, for the Snapchat augmented reality lens challenge. To commence the day, a bit of history behind the app. First released to Apple devices in 2011 (and later to android devices in 2012), Snapchat has grown exponentially in use, from a few million daily users initially to a record 347 million back in 2022!

Then it was on to the core activity for the day, students would be finding out about Snapchat’s augmented reality (AR) ‘lenses’, and then using what they had learnt to create their own AR lens promoting a cause they are passionate about. Designs included spreading awareness about autism, reducing littering, the dangers of pollution, and even Movember!

After seeing all the ideas, students voted on one design to progress to the final, competing against other schools attending the visit. An AR mask about saving the planet was chosen and, whilst this entry did not win overall, it was very well-presented and received a lot of praise from the audience, drawing the day to a close. Many thanks to Mr Keen for leading the visit and to Snapchat for hosting such an enjoyable event!
